Thunderday, 11th Day of Firewane, CY 916
A week has passed since the events in the Hidden Temple. The party has helped members of the Temple of Knowledge clear out the subterranean temple; desecrating and destroying its altar. The tunnel from the temple leads to a hidden cove to the East of the Docks.
With the door to the warehouse shattered, squatters have started making a temporary home in the abandoned building when no priests or party members are around.
Brau and Dunkelbock have started frequenting the “Runestone”, a social club for dwarves located in the Eastern District. The club consists of old veterans of the Dwarven-Elf Wars who get drunk, tell war stories, and loudly vocalize their hatred for “them pointy-eared bastards”. Brau and Dunkelbock choose not to mention that they have Elven friends.
Arya disappears frequently to explore the town and is a font of town gossip and news when the party gets together in the “Scribe’s Quill” common room at night. She mentions strange thefts occurring in the Eastern District and Scurvytown. One vendor says that he was approached by a child who suggested that he hold the vendor’s merchandise for him so that it wouldn’t be stolen. The vendor couldn’t resist and the child walked off with a silver necklace and several rings.
Turgon and Balasar do the bulk of the work clearing out the Hidden Temple. Most of the squatters that they kick out of the abandoned warehouse are hooked to a drug called “Skittles”. They become very concerned about a drug epidemic that is sweeping through Freeport and decide to investigate.
- Balasar removes the drug from one squatter’s system (Lay on Hands) and learns that the withdrawal symptoms of the drug include violence and madness as the squatter goes crazy and attacks Balasar and Turgon.
- They hear of a healer using bizarre methods to treat the addicted in Scurvytown. They investigate and meet Theodoric. He uses unconventional “scientific methodology” to cure the sick in Scurvytown. While his explanations and techniques are dubious, his “restoring the balance of bodily humors” seems to be quite effective in weaning addicts off “Skittles” and curing the withdrawal symptoms. Theodoric mentions that the drug is quite new to Freeport but has gained a firm foothold among all the neighborhoods of the city in just the last month. He chooses to help those who can least afford getting help.
The group only has a couple of more nights at the Scribe’s Quill and meets to figure out what to do next.
While meeting in the common room, they are approached by an Elf that Brau recognizes as Kali Lannen. She is an elven sorceress that had rescued Brau as a child when his village was sacked in the Dwarven-Elf war and sent him to the Orphanage of the Golden Heart.
Arya is intrigued by the tunnel to the hidden cove. All agree that the Warehouse would make a decent base of operations. Turgon decides that he’ll see about getting the door fixed. Meanwhile, the rest of the party will see about identifying the current owner and make an offer on the warehouse.
The adventures go down to the auditor’s office and see that the Warehouse deed is held by Telyria Crescent. She is the daughter of a wealthy merchant and the Warehouse was apparently given to her for her sweet sixteen birthday. She evidently doesn’t care or know that she owns it, since there’s no signs of upkeep.
Telyria is known as a partier. Arya decides to get a copy of the deed and find this party girl (hopefully drunk) to have her sign the deed over to the party. Arya finds out where she’s going to be that night and the girls in the group get dressed up to go out on the town. At the bar, they chat up the now drunk party girl. The girl has no idea about the property and throws a fit that her father would give her a crappy building in the middle of Scurvytown as a Sweet Sixteen present. Telyria drunkenly signs the property over to the party under the condition that they clear out the riff-raff and possibly set it on fire!?!? Arya agrees and fakes the fire by having Balasar breath fire into the air on top of the warehouse.
The party is on the way to obtain supplies for their new base of operations. Ahead, a wagon skids to a halt amid the shouts of men and screams of women. While this is going on, two children relieve the wagon of a trunk and hustle it down an adjacent alley….the party pursues.
The party is ambushed in the alley by other children….who can work magic!!
The children have arm tattoos that glow as they work their sorcerous magic. The party notices that the tattoos give of a golden light when a child first casts a spell, then is lined with a sickly purple light. Casting a spell after that results in a random discharge of Chaos Magic (automatic roll on the Chaos Magic chart in the PHB).
A skinny boy with a purple-limned tattoo drops his part of the trunk and attempts to defend himself with a sleep spell. The sleep spell is ineffective, but a gout of Chaos Lightning vaporizes the child and takes down Brau and Maria. Balasar manages to heal Maria and give chase to the remaining child carrying the trunk. The rest of the party is harried by other children casting spells from the rooftops; one conjures an illusory wall behind his trunk-toting comrade, another rains magic missiles on the party before retreating. Balasar catches up with the child with the trunk and with an overzealous blow kills him outright. During the confusion, Brau bleeds out before Maria is able to leap to his aid.
The recovered trunk simply contains normal clothes that are returned to the owners of the wagon. They say that it appeared as if a child ran out in front of the wagon….but nothing is found underneath the wheels.
Brau’s body is taken to the Runestone Social Club where they prepare the body for a proper Dwarven funeral. The funeral will be the following Thunderday. A dispirited party seeks solace at the bottom of a bottle at the Scribe’s Quill.
The party is approached by Commissioner Xander Williams who asks them to discreetly approach a half-orc thug named Linech about a job. Xander noticed that Turgon and Balasar took an interest in the Skittles issue and needs help.
Linech ran most of the Skittles production for the Cutthroats. Xander raided the production operation on Westward and destroyed it. He thinks that Linech might have stashed some merchandise because he is hearing that Linech is discreetly trying to hire mercenaries for a “salvage mission”.
The party meets with Linech in “the Burrow”. They undergo 20 questions from Linech and his paranoid assistant Seanus, but eventually convince Linech that they’re right for the job. He says that his ship “The Arrowhead” was sunk in the harbor a day ago. It was transporting the remains of his 13 year old daughter back from the site of a devious attack on his property. He tearfully asks that her coffin be recovered. He also warns of other “interested parties” in the sunken ship.
He offers 1200 gp and a potion of water breathing for each party member…the party accepts.
