Moonday, 1st Day of Firewane, CY 916:
The party is stranded in Freeport by Captain Ron of The Lapstrap. Maester Brau will pray to Talos morning and dusk to send The Lapstrap to the bottom of the sea.
Right off the boat, the party is accosted by a gang of toughs. This gang has bitten off more than they can chew and their leader quickly takes a crushing blow from Brau and a fatal one from Arya. The rest of the thugs run.
In the confusion, the party’s bags and unworn gear is stolen by another group. Arya disappears to track down the bandits that stole the party's gear.
The down on their luck party is approached by Brother Egil from the Temple of Knowledge who witnessed the party’s confrontation with the toughs and was impressed with their moxie. He hires them to find his friend and co-worker at the Temple, Lucius. Since the party is currently poor, he arranges for cheap lodging at The Scribe's Quill.
The Job – Find Brother Lucius (reward 150 gp):
- Lucius became "odd" about 18 months ago, alienating his best friend Egil and getting expelled from the Temple for attempting to read tomes from the forbidden section of the library.
- Lucius disappeared for 9-10 months then returned to the Temple begging their forgiveness. He was provisionally reinstated and seemed his normal self. Unfortunately, he started acting weird again about a month ago…this time due to lack of sleep. He then disappeared again 2 weeks ago.
- Brother Egil has sought the help of the Temple, but no one knows anything.
- The party accepts the job, getting half of the 150 gp payment up front to buy some armor.
The group procures 3 sets of Ring Mail armor from [[Big Bob's Armor Shoppe]] at a reasonable price. They agree to allow Big Bob first crack at any armor or weapon's they come across while adventuring.
The party searches Lucius' apartment. They find a trap door to the basement that is lined with newly erected bookshelves (empty). They also find a weird to-do list:
- Talk to Captain Scarbelly
- Buy Turnips
- Update Diary
- Read Travel Log
Scarbelly is the captain of a notorious smuggler ship the Bloody Vengeance. They are a crew of bloodthirsty orcs and they are feared by sailors at the Docks.
The party goes to the Harbormaster and get tacit permission to deal with the thugs themselves. After consulting shipping schedules, an ambush is planned for tomorrow afternoon.
Scarbelly finally arrives at dusk. The party asks about Lucius and the Captain violently denies knowing who that is. As his crew starts to ready weapon, the party graciously takes it's leave. As they leave, the party hears the Captain scolding his crew about leaving the ship and fearfully mentions a wizard named Kenzil.
After making the party wait in the lobby the requisite amount of time to make himself feel important, the group meets with Milo. He politely says nothing, but is definitely withholding information. The group accuses him of withholding information; he bans the party from the Temple of Knowledge.
Deflated, the party tells Brother Egil that they're out of ideas on our search for Lucius, but will still keep eyes and ears open. They also confirm what he already suspects; that Milo knows more than he's letting on.
After lunch, the party sets up the ambush on the Day 1 Thugs. Right on schedule, the boat unloads and the gang attempt to capture some of the disembarking passengers. They run immediately upon noticing the party…butmanages to put 3 to sleep.
Upon questioning the party learns: they have no real leader now; they sell the captured passengers to slave ships that pass through Freeport. The party allows the Harbormaster to take credit for the capture and leave out the back door (don't want a reputation as narks on the dock!!).
On the way back to the [[Scribe's Quill]], the party is ambushed by a group of mercenaries bearing yellow shields. They were not the most competent group of mercs and were quickly dispatched. The beautiful thing about Freeport is that this is a common occurrence. Rolling the bodies for loot (without law enforcement interference) reveals a slip of paper with an address and time (this evening).
Being short on time, the party stashed the loot at the Quill and took a rickshaw to the address. Turned out to be a meeting at a seedy bar with an out of place scribe looking to pay for an assassination. He said that Milo asked him to set it up because a certain group was asking too many questions.
The party retrieved Brother Egil and gave him an update… the scribe was stored in the basement at Lucius' place. The scribe mentioned a meeting at the safe house where he gets his instructions happening tonight. A rickshaw ride later, the group witnesses their buddy Brother Milo entering the building.
As the party went to enter the building, Arya showed up with the stolen equipment. The building was deserted except for a secret entrance behind a large wine cask in the basement. This lead to a hidden temple of The Unspeakable One.
The temple was teeming with small lizard men, and the humans that were members of the temple seemed to worship them; calling them "Lemurians". The Lemurians the group met seemed weak and feral and were beaten down easily. Milo was encountered in the main temple and he turned out to be a shape shifting species of these Lemurians.
Lucius says that the lizard men kept torturing him to discover what happened during his 8-9 month disappearance…the details of which he still can't remember.
A grateful Brother Egil paid the remaining 75 gp owed and promised to lend his resources at the Temple of Knowledge to research any future questions the party might have; this includes immediate reinstatement with the Temple.
